While the word “cure” might be a bit of an exaggeration, there are certain conditions that can be treated, simply by drinking water. Our bodies are made up of mostly water, so its no surprise that dehydration can lead to many illnesses. Drinking plenty of water is essential to good health maintenance.

Rather than spend money on over-the-counter medications on these everyday ailments, try treating them naturally, with a glass or two of water, instead

Hiccups

Hiccups are a strange condition, usually caused by an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm, which happens when one eats too much, drinks too much of something fizzy, or swallows too much air.

Many natural remedies for the hiccups have been suggested, and drinking water is probably the oldest trick in the book. There are several ways to drink water that could treat the hiccups. Some say that drinking upside down from the wrong side of the glass can cure your hiccups.

Others suggest that drinking warm water may help, since heat applied to a muscle has been known to heal cramps or spasms. Usually, downing one full glass of water all at once will cure your hiccups, if not permanently, then at least temporarily.

Drinking without stopping to breathe forces the diaphragm to stay still during the seconds that you spend swallowing the water, so that the time you’ve finished a full glass, the diaphragm has fully relaxed. If one glass doesn’t work, you may want to repeat the process a second time

Hunger

While water is not an adequate substitute for the nutrients obtained from food, if you’re hungry and can’t eat right away, a glass of water can help curb your appetite, temporarily. People who fast for spiritual or religious reasons are told to drink plenty of water before, during and after a fast begins.

The reason for this is that body can survive extended periods without food, but only a few days without water. When food is scarce, treat your hunger pangs with a glass of water.

Bad Breath

Bad breath is normally caused by dehydration. If you have chronic bad breath, it may be due to a deeper condition, within your digestive tract. However, water is a very important element in the digestive process, and most digestive ailments can be prevented by staying hydrated. Drinking water aids in digestion and helps eliminate toxic waste products from the body that can cause bad breath.

Hangovers/Headaches

In many cases, headaches are caused by dehydration. Staying hydrated can prevent headaches, but if you already feel one coming on, you can treat it by drinking water. If water does not remedy the problem, then it was probably caused by something else, and you may want to research other headache remedies. A headache is just one of several symptoms you experience during a hangover.

Hangovers occur after a long night of drinking alcohol, as alcohol dehydrates the body. Drinking plenty of water while consuming alcohol can help prevent a hangover, but if it’s already the morning after, simply rehydrate your body, eat a good meal, and sleep it off. Within a few hours, you should be good to go.

Acid Reflux and Indigestion

As mentioned before, water is an important element in the digestive process. Your body’s pH has a lot to do with you overall health, and maintaining an alkaline environment can help prevent and/or treat indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux. One natural way to boost your body’s alkalinity is to drink lemon water.

The quality of the water is important; I recommend using a water filter to remove impurities from your water, and squeezing a piece of lemon in it to raise its pH. This, along with a diet rich in fresh vegetables, will help neutralize your stomach acid, preventing conditions normally caused by an overly acidic internal environment.

What other ailments do you know of that may be treated or even cured by drinking more water?
