Exercise Which Is Best ?
By Mark on Feb 13, 2008 in Weight loss tips
We all know the relevance of doing exercise in relation to losing weight, what this often poses is a question as to which is best for any particular person, some recent research data that was published has found that doing resistance training is far more effective in the long run than probably say aerobics or walking.
Scientists did experiments on rats and manipulated genes, to see what would happen when the gene was turned on, it gave the mice muscles that would be gained by doing weight training, then they tried something else, they tried turning the gene off to see what the results would be then, when the mice were given a poor diet they became obese started to have liver problems as well as diabetes as well.
However once the gene was switched back on again something rather interesting happened they started to burn fat once again. Also something quite unexpected was found also the fatty liver that it had developed, while the gene was off also was gone as well as the insulin resistance that was developed when the gene was turned off.
Also the mice were still eating a poor diet nonetheless and was doing very limited physical activity if any at all,the scientists who conducted the study found a way to make a gene that was the same as in people who do resistance training like weightlifters etc this is known as type II muscle, this muscle only develops as a result of resistance training you will not build this muscle if you’re doing other types of exercise.
This type of muscle is completely different to the type that is acquired by running or walking which is known as type I, any other form of exercise that doesn’t use resistance training will not build this sort of muscle if you are just walking there is no resistance whatsoever on flat ground unless you’re walking uphill all the time.
The conclusions of the finding of this study are that picking up heavy objects does more than just build muscle it also has an overall effect on your body metabolism so in conclusion if you have these muscles and not doing an awful lot you will still burn up energy.
This coincides with another post I wrote about doing exercise into two short bursts per day that which is exactly what I did when I was doing my exercise. If you have any thoughts on this or experience I would be interested to know if you have found it harder to lose weight by just walking or what is written above does ring true.
This does seem to be a fascinating piece of research what do you think ? please feel free to leave a comment and have your say opinion.
Its always nice to get feedback.
