Is Exercise and The Fact It Makes You Thin a Myth?

time-magazine-august-17Something caught my eye the other day, which was a link that somebody gave me, to a story it was on Yahoo shines website. It spoke about a recent article that was written by Time magazine, which briefly says that exercise does not actually make you thin.

Now writing about this can always seem a bit controversial, however I thought it might be of interest to. People because not everybody is always of the same opinion. And here is what it said. It starts by saying that approximately 45 million Americans, belong to either a gym or health club.

To keep themselves fit and healthy. In America , they spend a incredible 19 billion pounds a year on going to health clubs, and gym memberships. That is a staggering amount of money and just goes to show, how big the health/keep fit industry is.

Many people do join these, gyms and never actually go. And a lot of us do say that we exercise regularly. Yet the world over. And predominantly in America , obesity rates continue to soar. And, shows no signs of slowing down.

The author said, once he has done his exercise he tend to get hungry afterwards. So he tends to eat more on the days, when he has done it. And less on those days when he hasn’t.

The normal statement that we hear, which is exercise is essential for losing weight is quite a recent one would you believe. During the 1960s, doctors advised their patients not to do vigorous exercise.

If you fast forward to today, doctors these days even encourage their older patients to get some kind of exercise.

Even if it is only gentle and of course we know that, the benefits of it are too numerous to mention. But to mention a few such as, lower cholesterol levels, far less likely to contract diabetes, and have heart problems later on in life.

Now it seems from what he says, that exercise has become somewhat overrated. Eric Ravussin, whom is a prominent researcher, in exercise at a university in the United States .

Says “In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless,”

which myself I do find quite hard to believe. However, there again that is my opinion sorely. What he says is that exercise isn’t important as people think. When it comes to losing weight, as stated in so many gyms/health clubs etc.

Eric says, the problem isn’t necessarily the fact that exercise doesn’t help you burn calories, which it does. It is more about the fact that it can make you hungry as well, so a knock-on effect of this is you eat more hence gain weight.

A study was conducted, which monitored people who didn’t exercise to see what happened to them. They were then, split into four groups, one group had 464 women who did no exercise whatsoever, some women in three of the groups had a personal trainer, and worked out as follows, for the following time periods; two minutes, 136 minutes, and 194 minutes.

And the remaining women which were in the fourth group were told to, carry on as normal, none of the women what so ever were told to change what they ate. Whilst doing the study they were asked to fill in a medical questionnaire, in order to track results etc.

The results came back which were quite interesting, all the women in all the groups lost weight, including the ones in the controlled group. The interesting thing is the women who had the personal trainer, which you would of thought would have lost substantially more weight, surprisingly didn’t.

So why is this happening then? one of the researchers, has a theory and calls it compensation. The odd thing here is the women who were exercising vigorously ate more food, before they started their routine, one of the reasons given for this is. They used it like a reward system because they have just done something that is good for them so hence the need to eat.

Church says who is the researcher for the study, says he noticed that his friends would go out jogging, and then go on to say that they weren’t losing any weight. However, as it turns out they were going to Starbucks and buying calorie-laden muffins afterwords.

Another of the theories is that when we were, less domesticated you might say.  And cave dwellers we would have been moving around all the time, especially in the summer foraging for food. And this is why we can tend to gain weight, more movement is better throughout the day.

Nowadays we are advised to exercise vigorously for a day up to an hour and that is it. However, if you think about it most of the work we do these days is not very labour-intensive.

During the war, people did far more a labour-intensive jobs than we do these days, they were far healthier and ate less food. When go jogging next please try and avoid the following landmarks, Domino’s pizza, your local chip shop, anywhere that sells muffins, your local kebab house etc.

Fear of Hunger Does it Encourage Obesity

171722291_b5a7cc28d7[1]Obesity now is a worldwide global phenomenon, so much so it is now being called globesity. There can be quite a number reasons why people overeat and become an obese person at the bottom of it all is just over eating.  But are there any other factors that we should be taking into consideration, that may be causing people to eat more than they should.

How about the fear of being hungry ? a poll was set up in Virginia , which came to the conclusion that obese people do in actual fact have a fear of being hungry.  These people were observed as carrying food around with them because they were scared of being hungry.

Perhaps these behaviour’s were implanted in their subconscious minds, by the peer pressure of their parents when they were at a suggestible age, some of things that they may of been told were such things as, eat all your food and you will keep healthy. Or make sure that you leave your plate clean and don’t leave anything behind.

Is there anything behind being hungry ?  as far as fear is concerned, as this does tend to happen on a subconscious level of the person concerned it’s as if there mind. Just can’t manage without food so the person has to carry it around with them, if you are suffering from a fear of hunger then this will scupper your plans to lose any weight long-term.

It maybe even the fact that it has been going on such a long time that you’re not even aware of it. When most people get hungry they may feel the empty feeling in their stomach, or when they get really hungry they might feel quite high and light headed. If we look at this from another angle, when we eat so much food and become bloated, this can make us feel tired and feeling lethargic as our stomachs are working so hard to digest all the food we have eaten.

In order to try and stop this happening to yourself try grading your hunger on a scale of 1 to 10, unless you get up to 7 then don’t eat.

Here are some tips to stave off hunger :

  • Become consciously aware of when you are hungry, have you ever noticed that maybe when you’re watching a commercial break, and all those sensual images of food are displayed before you. It doesn’t take too long before you’re saliva glands are saying eat something. So if you can avoid watching commercials that promote food.
  • Listen to what your body is telling are you really hungry, or could it be that you’re just bored. Sometimes we can tend to eat food just like people who smoke cigarettes are bored. So if it is a boredom problem go for a walk and get some exercise, exercise tends to stop hunger pangs.
  • Break the habit of carrying food around with you unless you really do need to do it,  it’s very easy to start a habit and not realise it’s become automatic. But very much the same way that you learn to ride a bicycle or drive a car. Carrying food around with you because you are scared of being hungry is merely a pure habit. The only way to break this pattern is to stop doing what you are doing.
  • Try to analyse and understand what it is that is making you, want to carry this food around with you and making you scared of being hungry. It may be something in your dark and distant past that is causing it. If you are unable to sort the problem out yourself, sometimes hypnosis can help with these types of issues, so consider this an option.
  • Many sites these days have down loadable hypnosis tracks which may not necessarily be related to a fear of hunger. But you may be able to use something similar.

Why Do Some People Stay Thin?

214417412_545e78ce03[1]Have you ever wondered why it is that some people, can eat as much as they want but never seem to gain weight. Speaking from my own experience as a child I seem to remember eating quite well, and still staying thin.

When I was talking to somebody the other day they happened to mention that a programme had been on television which spoke about obesity and weight loss as, I missed it in the week, I downloaded it and watched it over the weekend.

There were quite a few interesting parts throughout the programme , which scientist’s spoke, in between the test results of the participants about what they thought were the causes of obesity and overeating. The experiment involved 10 participants who were naturally thin, the main reason for doing this was because a lot of studies done around weight loss and obesity mainly tend to monitor overweight obese people, rather than thin people.

Here is what they were told to do, eat 5000 calories per day which is roughly double what men are supposed to eat, where as women are supposed to eat 2000 calories per day this was to be monitored over a four-week period.

To see if there was any major differences between the participants of how much weight they gained and body fat percentage, they were told to do no more than 5000 steps per day which was monitored with a pedometer. Which in realistic terms doesn’t equate to much exercise at all.

So the question that the scientists wanted to know was why is it some people do get fatter when others don’t. One of the scientists came up with the theory was because, of the ways that our ancestors used to eat. When there was less food available.

Where cavemen meant to be fat ?

In days gone by when food was very scarce the people most likely to survive was those who had extra body weight. This is one of the reasons why we have fat and probably one of the reasons why we tend to gain weight because, now we tend to have an over abundance of food whereas our ancestors didn’t.

What has been proposed by one of the scientists is those people that were a bit heavier have now passed those genes on to their offspring, but in today’s society it’s not really needed, and this is one of the reasons why, some people do tend to be heavier because their ancestors were the same.

Do we pass obesity on ?

Another thing that came to light was, if sheep tend to have their lambs at a older age then these can tend to be fatter also, this can also apply to human beings if their parents do tend to over eat, they can pass this gene on to their offspring.

Can we eat and not get fat ?

One particular study which was done in Vermont prison which revolved around eating, consisted of giving the inmates as much food as they could possibly eat and if they reached the target than they would be released. The problem with this particular study was even though the prisoners ate as much food as they possibly could.

Some of them gained hardly any weight at all and at the time because it was done such a long time ago, there wasn’t much vadility given to it, the participants in the TV programme where more or less doing the same as what was done all those years ago.

Can coughs and colds spread obesity ?

A leading scientist in diseases and obesity Proffesor Nikhil Dhurandhar, had a colleague who had a problem with chickens and a particular virus which was killing them literally in their thousands. The interesting thing about this was, that all the chickens became with the virus became fat and it became a bit of a mystery as to why.

So they isolated the virus and injected some more chickens just to see what happened, they too became ill and fat as well so there was a connection between the virus and the chickens becoming fat. Because you just can’t use people as lab rats to try these particular experiments, the doctor wanted to see if somehow it may be present in humans also.

The handy thing was he runs an obesity clinic so took blood samples from his patients, and the results were quite surprising some of the blood samples identified antibodies. Which were related to this particular virus, almost 20 percent of the people that he took blood samples from, had the antibodies which proved that at one time or another they had the virus.

The way the body becomes infected by this particular virus is it gets in through your lungs, and infects your brain, liver and kidneys, the research found that one in three people were infected this way. However the doctor did say that the person carrying the virus may only have it for a few months at a time so not everybody would become infected with it.

So there is no need to think that if you come into contact with somebody and they are obese then you will become fat like them. But there is a possibility if you get a cough or a cold that you could become infected.

Can we survive off our own fat ?

Under a controlled experiment, one particular man who was desperate to lose weight fasted for a whole year and lost 275 pounds of weight, one of the scientists who studies fat says that it is possible to live off the oil that we use for energy within our fat cells, and this particular oil is what is burned when we exercise and lose weight.

Are we are programmed to eat more than we should ?

A woman scientist who has a particular interest in the psychology, as to why we eat as much as we do or shouldn’t did a experiment with some young children, in a classroom. She put food on plates and sat four children at tables, whilst doing other tasks such as drawing and colouring, interestingly enough when some children had eaten as much as they could.

They stopped eating whereas some children still kept on eating this was a bit puzzling to the researchers, until they looked into it a bit more deeply, they found that the children who kept on eating had something called the FT0 gene whereas the other children had a variant of it.

This tends to act like a switch in their brains, so instead of stopping eating they carry on, this is another genetic problem which people can have.

Another scientist Dr Ruby Leibel did a study and a monitored people over a two year period of time. First of all they were starved until they reached a set weight once that had been achieved they were given a set amount of calories they could eat per day but some of the people on the study found that they still were hungry.

In order to find out why this was they were given brain scans to see if they could find out why this was. The reason for it was that their brains thought that their obese weight was their correct weight, and this was the reason why they were consuming more food than they needed.

Because their brains were telling them to do so, it would seem that some people will feel hungry no matter how much they eat and it will be a struggle even if they are trying to lose weight because their brains will be telling them that they still need to eat more food even when they don’t need it.

Conclusion

At the end of the four week eating experiment, the 10 participants who were involved in it were measured both weight wise and for body fat, all of them gained some weight and had a higher percentage of body fat, all except one his weight remained constant because he turned into muscle rather than gaining weight. All the people whom took place in the study where thin as children.

And once they had stopped eating 5000 calories a day started to lose weight again quite easily, all in all quite fascinating really.

On a side note you may decide that you want to try and eat 5000 calories a day and see if your body turns to muscle, but the chances are that you will gain weight and become fat. But if you do drop me a line and let me know how it went.

Worlds Fattest Man uses Diet and Exercise To Lose Weight.!!!!

On my travels through cyberspace this morning, I came across a very inspiring story about the world’s fattest man, and how he managed to lose weight, how he actually managed to do this is incredible to say the least without using what would be the by far the easiest way to lose weight for somebody in his position would be surely to have a gastric bypass operation.

But the man in question decided against it Manuel Uribe 42 from Mexico, for one stage to get ready for this weighed in at an incredible 90 stone that is literally half a ton and this to me is by far the most inspirational part of the story using diet and exercise alone he has managed to shed an incredible 41 stone, this is not only inspirational but somewhat amazing also.

Mr Uribe was recommended to have a gastric bypass operation but refused to the astonishment of his doctors, Mexican doctors put him on a low carbohydrate high protein diet for two years, and has quite literally amazed his doctors by achieving such a phenomenal task in such a short space of time.

He says he is now going to throw a big party to celebrate such a amazing achievement and start going out the house for walks were as before he couldn’t since he began his weight loss journey he has set up a website so people can track his progress online.

In March of this year he will be lifted out of his house on a crane and driven round the streets of his local town he did this before when he reached his 60 stone goal he says he now feels great better than ever so if you’re struggling to lose weight then this must be one of the most inspiring stories you’re probably read in a long time I must say it certainly opened my eyes to what can be done when you put your mind to it in a word I think this is truly an amazing achievement.

Is Technology Fueling Obesity ?

obeseIn a recent news report it has been said that Britons, are spending less on the price they pay for using communications, but spending more time using them, according to what the statistics say, the average consumer would spend in 2007 approximately seven hours and 30 minutes per day watching television, nine minutes browsing the Internet and or using any other means of communication

Since the year 2002 mobile phone usage has rocketed, and personal computers and laptop usage has gone up four times compared to what it was. If we fast forward to where we are now we now spend approximately three hours and 40 minutes per day watching television, and browsing the Internet has risen to 24 minutes per day, and mobile usage 10 minutes per day.

If we actually look at the statistics, we can clearly see that technology these days is a big part of our lives, there was even a more said within this particular news reference, which says that a lot of people these days will sit with their laptop and watch their TV at the same time.

A most people these days don’t even sit at a table to eat their dinner hence the reason a lot of food you can buy in packets such as ready meals coined the phrase TV dinners.

Because you can quite simply put them in the microwave heat them up and within 10 minutes your meal is ready, so you can sit and eat it in front of your television, and when you have finished eating it.

You can use your laptop computer and then sit there browsing the Internet or whatever else is you do, and once seated sometimes it can be very hard to want to move or do very little else, so as is normally the case exercise tends to get a back seat a bit.

If we go back in history a bit just digressing a bit here, some American researchers in Harvard, decided to look into why America is becoming one of the fastest rising countries were will obesity is abundant, their theory tends to revolve around the division of labour in the 1960s a average non working, American woman spent on average at least two hours per day on cooking family meals.

It would seem that figure has now been cut in half, and in relation to that manufacturers have made food more cheaper convenient, and variable as well.

Let’s take a particular instance the humble potato whereas in years gone by you would actually peel the potatoes, wash the potatoes and then boil the potatoes, and he may also mash them as well when I was younger this was the way we used to eat our food mostly. I don’t seem to remember oven chips or french fries being around at that particular time.

Nowadays we eat potatoes as french fries we don’t even bother to cook them them ourselves, because of the modern advances in food production prices have literally dropped through the floor, and due to the fact that we have all these conveniences around us we tend to eat more snacks which tends to lead to frequent grazing.

And these do tend to be quite hefty snacks, and we eat these rather than regular meals, when you actually see a lot of people on television who are trying to lose weight, you tend to notice these convenience foods are everywhere, and it’s also very tempting to eat take-aways, because people always say that they are strapped for time and don’t particularly want to cook a meal when they have come from home from work.

The reality of this is though that doesn’t always take that long to prepare fresh nutritious food which is a lot far better for you than buying lots of snack type foods all in all everything these days is about convenience, I think I have lost count of the amount of times that my blog gets to searchedor the term lose weight quickly or lose weight fast.

I’m afraid we need to take stock of what we are or aren’t doing because ultimately that is where the answer lies to our ever-growing nations of overweight people and I would say myself that technology plays a large part in this things have just become far too convenient for us.

The whole problem with all of this situation is technology a lot of times can soak up so much time, that we don’t even think that we should be doing other things, they seem to take a back seat. After all which is more enjoyable 30 minutes of exercise,or sitting in front of the TV with your laptop, and talking on your mobile phone at the same time, whilst eating your food the mind boggles doesn’t it.

I don’t think they would have been too many obese cavemen do you.

Obesity From a World Perspective

Being that I have been having a bit of a obesity theme this week I thought it would be quite interesting to see which nations and or countries, have a biggest obesity problems, so with that in mind I decided to do some research and see what I could find, and came across a list that showed the percentage of people, in a country who were obese.

This will give a very overall clear picture of exactly how big a problem this has become worldwide not just in our country but everywhere. Eating too much food has quite literally become a global phenomenon. According to what this site says where this information came from there are now 1.6 billion obese adults worldwide

Here is the list of the world’s fattest countries.

1. Nauru 94.5 percent
2. Micronesia 91.1 percent
3. Cook Islands 90.9 percent
4. Tonga 90.8 percent
5. Niue 81.7 percent
6. Samoa 80.4 percent
7. Palau 78.4 percent
8. Kuwait 74.2 percent
9. United States 74.1 percent
10. Kiribati 73.6 percent
11. Dominica 71 percent
12. Barbados 69.7 percent
13. Argentina 69.4 percent
14. Egypt 69.4 percent
15. Malta 68.7 percent
16. Greece 68.5 percent
17. New Zealand 68.4 percent
18. United Arab Emirates 68.3 percent
19. Mexico 68.1 percent
20. Trinidad and Tobago 67.9 percent
21. Australia 67.4 percent
22. Belarus 68.8 percent
23. Chile 65.3 percent
24. Venezuela 65.2 percent
25. Seychelles 64.6 percent
26. Bahrain 64.1percent
27. Andorra 63.8 percent
28. United Kingdom 63.8 percent
29. Saudi Arabia 63.5 percent
30. Monaco 62.4 percent
31. Bolivia 62.2 percent
32. San Marino 62.1 percent
33. Guatemala 61.2 percent
34. Mongolia 61.2 percent
35. Canada 61.1 percent
36. Quatar 61 percent
37. Uruguay 60.9 percent
38. Jordan 60.5 percent
39. Bahamas 60.4 percent
40. Iceland 60.4 percent
41. Nicaragua 60.4 percent
42. Cuba 60.1 percent
43. Germany 60.1 percent
44. Brunei Darussalam 59.8 percent
45. Slovenia 59.8 percent
46. Peru 59.6 percent
47. Vanuatu 59.6 percent
48. Finland 58.7 percent
49. Jamaica 57.4 percent
50. Israel 57.3 percent

I suppose when you look at this list and it’s no great surprise that the United States of America is in the top 10, and no great surprise that we number 28 on the list. Surprisingly enough China is in at 148 and has a score of 28.9 percent which is very low, Japan is even lower their score is 22.6 percent.
And interestingly enough India is at 176 and has a score of 16 percent.

Is it feasible to say that affluence is the cause of this it doesn’t seem so necessarily, the world over it just seems we have either good or poor eating habits which ever way you look at it, in this country we have a tendency to binge drink which is something which is on the increase.

Japan has been a very affluent society for a very long time now, but as we can see from the list their rates of obesity are very low, I dare say they have McDonalds, and take-away establishments much like every other country does.

But they could possibly have tighter restrictions on exactly how many there are in the country. If the thing about this is really we ultimately are in charge of what we eat, so if we become fat and or overweight then there is nobody to blame except ourselves. Which will always be the case I’m afraid.

Fat vs Thin Which is the Best Option

With the rising levels of obesity and so much focus on being overweight it does tend to be in the media spotlight rather a lot, every so often when I catch the news which isn’t that often I might add. You can’t helpfat-thin but notice when a story related to obesity and overeating comes on the news.

It really does make you wonder which of the two is better I personally myself do not like being fatter than I normally am even though I have put some weight on just recently I am aware of what has been causing it.

Let’s have a look at some of the pros and cons of being fat vs thin. It is not just psychological problems that you have to consider there are other things as well.

Overweight, Health

  • Being obese or overweight later on in life you’re far more likely to contract health problems such as adult onset diabetes, which is due to the lack of physical activity and eating the wrong foods, the problem with this is a lot of people aren’t even aware that they have it. There are others involved as well, high blood pressure, risk of stroke and or heart attack.
  • When you do any physical activity it will likely feel much harder to participate especially if it involves running around, you may find that you meet to rest more frequently, the main reason for this being is you tend to get a buildup of fat around your lungs which takes up the space so there is less room to expand and contract.
  • Your overall lifespan can be shortened greatly when you’re overweight.
  • You can tend to have less energy when you’re overweight, and don’t feel as good, you tend to miss that spring in your step.
  • Recent research that has come to light has found out that when you have a large belly then you’re far more likely to eat more food.

Overweight, Mental Health

  • In some studies that have been done, there has been some noted relationships with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.
  • Some people will not go anywhere because they are very self-conscious of being overweight, they feel that people are watching them and pointing at the person who is overweight.
  • Prejudices, there there is now something called fatism which is being prejudiced against overweight people, it may be slightly harder for overweight people to get work sometimes, or they may get rejected from interviews more because naturally the employer tends to think that, somebody who is overweight may have more health problems than somebody who is thin.

Normal Weight, Health

  • When you are at your normal weight, you’re far less likely to suffer from problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems and all the other diseases associated with being obese or and/or overweight.
  • Doing physical activities will not tire you out so much you have more energy to do things, and have that certain spring in your step.
  • Expect a longer life with fewer problems due to the onset of age, so things like adult onset diabetes won’t be so much of a problem.
  • When you’re thinner you don’t need so much food because your overall body mass is less you don’t need so many calories to keep it going, think of a big car with a big engine it always need plenty of fuel, where as a small car uses less fuel. Another fact of this is when you lose weight your stomach shrinks as well so you will eat less food.

Normal, Weight Mental Health

  • When you’re a thinner person there is a likelihood that at some time in your life you may suffer from mental health problems, such as depression anxiety etc. But I would say that the probability of it is going to be far less you will probably tend to think about how you feel as a person more, and feel more confident being a thinner person.
  • Low self-esteem is probably more likely to be associated with being fat rather than thin.
  • You’re probably far more likely to feel self-conscious about how you look, and won’t probably look at yourself in the mirror all the time thinking about how you look. And whether or not you should lose some weight, because things can tend to go on a subconscious level, we can tend to not notice that they are going on at all even though they are.
  • You’re probably not going to come up against fatism so your chances of getting employment may be in fact higher. Because you will not be seen as so much of a risk.
  • Overall you will probably feel a lot happier as a person and far less likely to suffer from low self-esteem problems.

This is just a general overview so that people can see what problems there are depending on whether you are fat or thin. It doesn’t mean to say that being overweight is a bad thing and it’s not meant to be a fat person bashing post, some of the things that have been written about here problem will not apply to a lot of people, overweight people can be happy, and thing people can be unhappy.

It is more of a general overview a comparison of sorts and it is merely up to the individual to decide whether they want to be as they are or not.

Fat and How it affects your Body Clock

Some groundbreaking research has just come to surface regarding the eating of fat and how it Day 273: Say Whaaaat?affects your body clock, I do know myself that not getting enough sleep can have an effect on your appetite and how much food you eat overall.

The Research

The findings down this study found that if a high fat diet is consumed it can interfere with your normal eating and sleeping habits also, the study was conducted at Northwestern University .

One of the researchers was quoted as saying that it can be a “matter of days before the effect starts to happen ” said lead researcher Joe Bass.

The study was done on two sets of lab rats which were kept in total darkness throughout the test phase of the study, this was to ensure that the rats internal clock didn’t know what time it was, so they would be unsure as when to eat.

The first set of rats was kept on a normal healthy diet while the second set was given a high fat diet in order to see what actual differences there would be.

What tends to happen is the body’s internal clock which is called the circadian clock, this tends to regulate when we eat sleep and become awake, other studies have shown that when this pattern is disrupted through lack of sleep etc this can in itself cause obesity and diabetes as well.

What they found from the study was that the mice that were eating the high fat diet, start to eat at the wrong times and the rest also at inappropriate times this started to happen over a period of two weeks.

Conlclusion

One of the researchers was quoted as saying that, if you give a predominantly high-fat diet to a mouse they will tend to eat more food overtime.

This to me does explain quite a few things actually this about how eating fat can tend to make you feel more hungry, also as well as this fat is known to have addictive qualities.

Which affect the neurotransmitters in your brain similar to how drugs work so this does explain how easily it is to become addicted to a high fat diet very easily.

However though you do need some fat in your diet otherwise this can lead to depression but it all needs to be in moderation. This is a very interesting concept indeed about fat something that I have never come across before.

Diet Soda is There a Link to Obesity

diet soda, low sugar drinkDoes diet soda do what it says on the tin ?

Such is the way of things these days that we have all got used, to drinking soft drinks but the only problem with this is. That most soft drinks contain lots of sugar which consequently can lead to weight gain and cause other health issues such as diabetes. So what do we do we can either stop drinking sugary drinks altogether, or consume some other alternative which is the now popular diet drinks that we have on the market.

But because of the way that these particular products are marketed to us we are always led to believe, that we shouldn’t have any problems at all drinking these healthy alternatives or is there now cause for concern.

The answer to that would seem is yes, there is evidence that has been found that drinking diet sodas or drinks can in fact cause you to gain weight. Here is what the research found.

Research

The actual information was collected over a eight year period of time, one of the researchers said that they didn’t expect that the people whom were drinking the diet sodas, would be linked with obesity at all but this wasn’t the case, which they found quite surprising.

It was noted that their chances of coming obese were even higher when they looked more closely at their results they found that the people that were drinking the diet soda were far more likely to become obese.

They said statistically that 41% of people whom consumed diet drinks each day were far more likely to end up overweight. When you actually look at the statistics they are quite alarming

For people who drank regular soda

These were the results

  • 26% for people who drank half a can day
  • 30% for people who drank half or one can a day
  • 32.8% for people who drank one to two cans each day
  • 47.2% for people who drank over two cans a day

For people who drank diet soda

These were the results

  • 36.5% for people who drank half a can
  • 37.5% whom drank half or one can
  • 54.5% whom drank one to two cans
  • 57.1% whom drank two cans

So what is the actual reason for these alarming results ?

How artificial sweeteners can affect you

It could be due to the fact that the researchers found some papers on artificial sweeteners which, when fed to rats it made them want to consume more foods. But when they were given regular sugar their appetite remained the same, so it would seem that the artificial sweetener that is used in the particular drink makes you want to eat more food.

Has caffeine in does that make any difference ?

Something which wasn’t mentioned in this study is that a lot of soft drinks whether it be diet or not do in fact have quite a lot of caffeine in which we all know is a stimulant, and it can mimic the stress response if you consume too much of it, and stress in itself can tend to make you eat more food, whether or not there is any solid foundation to this theory of mind is another matter. But you could say it is something to consider.

Do you drink it yourself and has it made you gain weight ?

Do you yourself or anybody else for that matter drink diet drinks ? And have you noticed any difference as in has it made you want to eat more food. The problem with a lot of this sort of thing is we often don’t tend to take notice of what is going on and what our bodies are telling us.

We tend to automatically tend to eat when we are hungry and don’t think about that what we are drinking might be making us want to eat more food.

Conclusion

The overall conclusion that the team came to was that if you are giving your body something that is sweet but has no actual calories then it will signal to your body That something is missing, and will want you to make the shortfall up in those. missing calories this is what they concluded that was causing the problem.

How To Get Rid of More Body Fat

I Had a e- mail from Margaret Wilde asking if I would post her article on, my blog as I had reproduced one of her articles before it is a very interesting one. As was the last one I posted, which was called obesity and the salt connection. You can read that particular article on her site. Enjoy this one it raises some very interesting points.

Fat Retention

You will probably already have read my assertion that it is fluid retention that is the cause/initiator of obesity. You may have disagreed with me and wondered what is my explanation for the fat retention which is certainly present in many – possibly most – overweight and obese people. – Here it is: – but it is complicated and you will need to stick with me as I explain!

It had been clear to me for many years that the calorie explanation for obesity (eating too many calories and not taking much exercise – i.e. greed plus laziness) must be wrong because many – probably most – people can eat as much as they like and not become overweight, even if they take very little exercise. – They are what I call on my website ‘the lucky people’. – They are the slim people. – They are the people who have healthy veins and kidneys and are not sensitive to salt. They simply excrete in the urine any excess salt and its attendant water, so they do not gain weight by fluid retention.

I realised intuitively that the reason they do not put on excess weight when they overeat is that they simply excrete any excess fat/calories they eat. (Faeces tend to contain a lot of fat/calories, which is why animal dung is used as fuel in many countries.) But I did not know the mechanism that caused the fat excretion in slim people and the fat retention in fatter people, though I did guess that it probably involved minerals in the diet, because people with fluid retention tend to be deficient in calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Then BBC2 showed a series of programmes called “The Truth About Food” and I learnt about some Danish research which throws light, on this see.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/slim/calcium.shtml where you will read: “a high calcium intake increases the excretion of fat in the faeces”. – There was the necessary information! – In fact, the researchers found that twice as much fat was excreted on a high calcium intake as on a low calcium intake – and this was independent of calorie intake. – They also found that dairy calcium (they suggest low fat yoghurt) is a particularly good source for this extra calcium.

Similarly, on http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org/vitamins/calcium.html you can read: “Calcium helps keep the weight off. Research suggests that if you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, you’re likely to be overweight.”

And on http://www.foodsolutions.eu.com/pastissue/article.asp?art=26677&issue=163 it says, “Although the contribution of the different mechanisms to the overall anti-obesity effect of calcium is not clear, there is much evidence from animal and human studies, that a high-calcium diet and/or calcium supplementation decreases body weight and fat.”

On one of the links – http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org/vitamins/calcium.html- from the BBC’s The Truth About Food site, it says: “Calcium is the mineral most likely to be deficient in the average diet. Let me repeat that. Calcium is the mineral most likely to be deficient in the average diet. Calcium deficiency is a condition in which we fail to receive or to metabolize an adequate supply of Calcium.”

There are a number of reasons that overweight people in particular tend to be deficient in calcium. The main reason is that sodium retention/salt sensitivity/fluid retention depletes the body of calcium.

Here are two other very simple reasons:

1. Most fat people are ‘dieting’ most of the time – i.e. they are eating insufficient food for their body’s needs.

2. Fat people are routinely advised to limit their intake of dairy food like milk because their advisors (wrongly) believe that milk is ‘fattening’.

So to reduce fat retention, if it is present, the most important thing is to alter the diet to reduce the fluid retention which is the initiating cause of excess weight and the primary reason for fat people being short of calcium and for fat people ‘dieting’. That means reducing sodium intake and ensuring plenty of fruit and vegetables in the diet (because their high potassium content helps to displace sodium from the body).

And specifically it also means having a higher intake of calcium, especially, if possible, from a dairy source like low fat yoghurt. – It is also necessary to ensure sufficient vitamin D intake, as this is needed to metabolise the calcium. Insufficiency of vitamin D is quite common, as is widely reported, e.g. here – http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamind.asp

In my personal opinion it is neither necessary nor desirable to adopt a low fat diet. Low fat intake can be harmful, especially for small children.
