Does Being Vegetarian cause Major Weight Loss

Does being vegetarian necessarily mean that you are going to lose lots of weight, myself  I am not a vegetarian but according to a study that has been conducted it does seem to be the case from what they say, overall vegetarians are slimmer than their meat-eating counterparts.

The Facts

Vegetarians health tends to be better than people who eat meat, and they don’t suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and any other diseases which tend to be linked with being overweight, this study however to me seems to make some very bold claims it says that you can achieve weight loss without having to do any exercise which to me seems a bit outlandish to say the least.

The information was compiled from 87 other studies done in the past, obesity is now skyrocketing especially in western civilisations where fast-food joints, are in abundance and as collective nations we are eating more food than ever before.

Overall the weight of vegetarians compared to their meat-eating companions, tends to be quite a big difference, in comparison this is between three and 20% less than somebody who does eat meat, now here’s the part that to me seems quite hard to believe they say that a low-fat vegan diet will help you lose one pound of fat per week, without exercising and doing anything else this also includes not controlling the amount of portions that you eat.

From what they say you can eat unlimited amounts of fruit and vegetables regardless of portion sizes without gaining weight, it goes on to say that the food eaten in a vegetarian diet helps with the fat burning process, also eating vegetables helps with insulin resistance instead of the food being stored as fat it tends to get taken up by the cells and burnt off hence no weight gain.

A team of researchers found that by switching to a vegetarian diet over a period of five years the participants did in fact gain less weight, in another study of 55,000 women found that the ones that ate meat were far more likely to be overweight than those people whom didn’t eat meat.

My Thoughts

Here are my thoughts on this I myself have never tried becoming a vegetarian or vegan for that matter, I was in a relationship once with someone who was a vegetarian and she never seemed to put on any weight perhaps it’s something I could try for a month to see what happens.

I’ll keep you updated on my progress although I must admit I think I will find it quite hard, to switch to eating vegetables and fruit etc. Mind you it would be interesting overall experiment to see what exactly did happen, I could do weekly updates just to see how I feel what difference it makes and so on.

In a post I wrote earlier this week about a program called eat to save your life which was hosted by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, they actually got some sausage meat and put it through a mincer so you could see what came out of it surprisingly there is more fat in sausages than there used to be compared to nowadays, they took a few selections of meat and you could see that today’s farming methods do in fact leave more fat on the meat.

Even chickens are bred this way when you actually look at a chicken it’s hard to tell how much is lean meat and how much isn’t, put on a supermarket shelf you tend to see quite a big piece of chicken which seems good value for money.

This gives the consumer a feeling of that they are getting more for their money when in fact in reality they are not, quite a while back now I wrote a post called how to beat supermarket psychology, in that post there are two videos based around how supermarkets do things, in one of them they actually liquidise a chicken and separate the fat off so you can actually see how much fat there is in a chicken compared to days gone by.

If anybody would like to put forward their argument or point you view regarding this I would be very interested to hear from you do you know anybody who is vegetarian and maintains constant weight ? and you a meat eater and is it harder to lose weight if you are one, comments and thoughts are always welcome please feel free to leave yours.

Eat To Keep Alive or to Save Your Life

jamie-oliverWhere ever you live in the world you may or may not have heard of someone called Jamie Oliver he is a British chef who had a programme on BBC2 called the Naked Chef the premise of this programme was very simple indeed they had a camera in his kitchen not in a studio like most cookery programmes.

And it was very successful there was a woman who used to talk him while he was preparing the meals and you got a glimpse into his life so the format they used was different to any other cookery programmes you may have seen.

A couple of weeks ago Jamie hosted a programme called eat to save your life I did read about this somewhere but completely forgot about it and one night when I couldn’t sleep switched the TV and there was this programme that had been mentioned in the newspaper.

Things Covered

Topics that were covered in the programme were how we have changed our eating habits over the years showing gradual increases in the amount of fat and sugar in our diets nowadaysm, it has all brought about by the introduction of ready meals fast forward about 10 years when microwaves came out that brought even more convenience foods into our diets, if you think about how we eat now and how we used to eat now, there are many big differences when I was younger we would choose to eat at a table and have cooked meals every day rather than processed packaged food which we have now at this particular time there wasn’t much of it about not like there is now.

Some people were put on running machines to see how their bodies coped with the exercise they were given to do quite surprisingly out of the three men who participated doing this exercise the one who was obese more than the others was in fact fitter, but when it came to having a CAT scan of his body this revealed a far more sinister picture his liver was full of fat and if you continue to eat the way he was eating than he would have far more trouble later on in life with his liver and any other diseases associated with obesity.

The Gruesome Parts

However there was something very different about this programme that had been never shown before as regards a programme focused on weight loss you may or may not have heard of a doctor who does autopsies on TV called Dr Gunther, at the end of the first part of this it ,concentrated on showing you some people that had been sliced across almost the same as you would sliced a piece of bread, so you could see the fat in their bodies you could see a cross-section of a fat person and a cross-section of a thin person saying this was quite eye opening to say the least you could see where the fat man’s cartridge had worn out in his legs due to the large amount of way he was carrying and you could see all the fat in his body and were it was.

The very last thing that was covered was Dr Gunther did a autopsy on a 25 stone man, the first thing he did was take the chest cavity off so you could see his internal organs the first thing he tried to do was see if he could find the mans ,liver which he said was very hard to see at the time because everywhere he looked there was fat it had pushed all his organs upwards. Whilst Dr Gunter was doing this he explained that the man would have had great difficulty breathing because of the amount of fat around his lungs.

This is one programme that I would highly recommend that you watch if you are able to if you did miss it you can download it off of Channel fours website they have a service called 40D which is short for four on demand

I wonder if Jamie Reads this he might pop by and say hello you never know who is reading your blog.

Obesity is food always to blame

obesityObesity in its own right is a huge problem these days there may be some countries that don’t have it, but most developed countries such as the United States and United Kingdom, do have their own obesity problems. Western lifestyles it would seem are the underlying reasons for it, the basic assumption for this is that you eat too much food or the wrong foods and you become fat.

It would seem it would seem that there are some misconceptions when it comes to understanding this, and they can be more underlying reasons as to why someone may be obese or not, we tend to say and think that person eats too much so therefore they are overweight.

But some people can eat what they want and never seem to put on any weight whatsoever.

Here are some things that are worth considering about this particular problem.

  • Lack of sleep (insomnia) studies have shown that a lack of sleep can in fact
affect if you will or will not lose weight, also you may suffer from depression and low self-esteem.
  • Caffeine will ramp up the production of cortisol which is the stress hormone, which as we well know produces the flight or fight response within our bodies and caffeine tends to lower your threshold to stress so you cannot handle it as well.
  • Too much stress can make you overeat studies were done at a psychiatric institute that proved that when you’re stressed that you will eat more food.
  • The psychological factors, people tend to eat food when they are bored stressed or for any other emotional reasons the association between the food and the emotion becomes that strong it’s almost automatic you don’t even have to think about it this is the basis for many addictions whether it be alcoholism, smoking, overspending there is always some root cause but because it’s an unconscious process you don’t tend to think about it.
Would you say yourself that some of these listed true I would be very interested in your comments on this.

How Milk can Help you To Lose Weight and Aid Health

milkThere are lots of anti milk campaigns on line in various places on the web so when I was, browsing through one of our tabloid newspapers on the lookout for something that might create a post which sometimes If I’m lucky it does, but one the other day caught my eye so thought it would make a great post. To blog about.

So here are the reasons why milk can help you with your health and help you to lose weight.

  • Milk sales have gone own while obesity levels continue to soar most of us associate dairy products with being fat or not being very good for us, but some researchers found after many years of following a large group of men 2,400 to be exact who drank a pint of milk everyday where far less likely to get something called metabolic syndrome which can cause diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure.
  • It has been found that people whom eat yogurt will tend to burn more fat than those who don’t
  • Milk has within it a acid that converts surplus calories into muscle.
  • In studies that where done in tennessee it was found that people who had yogurt lost belly fat which is where problems can be, 80% of belly fat was lost eating yogurt the people doing the study put it down to how the calcium breaks down the fat within the body.
  • Diabetes is on the increase not genetic but lifestyle induced, but as milk consumption in is decline but if we drink milk it can ward it off by at least 15% at least.
  • Milk can help lower your blood pressure it seems the high calcium content helps achieve this.
  • When you do a workout drink milk rather then fizzy designer drinks that cost a fortune milk helps retain fluid in your body whereas fizzy drinks don’t

Who says milk is all that bad.

Junk Food Marketing

This is becoming somewhat of a problem in our society corporate greed drives it, obesity levels in Europe continue to rise and it’s not going to stop, children are the most targeted group for this type of advertising.

Why is that it’s simple there brains aren’t that savvy to what is being done to them also there more receptive to change than adults.

So very easy to market to advertisers use any tactics they can to win over our siblings and put in front of them as much crappy food as they can, everyone has a television these days and it’s so easy to pipe this marketing to them even though prime time television advertising is expensive they can re-coup the costs very easily.

To give you a example of how much is spent here is a figure that shocked me when I first read it 480 million pounds each year is spent on junk food television marketing.

That is a hell of a lot when you think about it, there is a reason why all this happens though from the day your child is born it has one after another advertisement bombarded at it from all sources billboard’s, television, magazines, radio Internet.

And the messages are so powerful there minds can’t fight it and just go with the flow children as young as three are being marketed to even at that age so it’s not just when there starting to grow up.

The most likely places to find this are everywhere think of say for instance any celebrity endorsement is worth it’s weight in gold if a famous pop star endorses a soft drink like Pepsi or any other well known soft drink.

Then your child thinks well if it’s good enough for Mr XYZ or whoever then I got to have it,,this is a classic example of social proof in fact celebrities are social proof all over it’s very easy with there status to influence lots of people by what they say and do, this why advertisers like to use them there like walking testimonials for the advertisers.

So if one buys it the rest will follow and children are great for social proof at school on the Internet telling there friends what they like to eat and drink.

Here is how things breakdown television is by far one of the best mediums to peddle this stuff reaches lots of people and most house holds have one so the next time your child is sitting in front of the television take note at to what he is watching that doesn’t mean the programs either.

The Internet is becoming quite high as well for our junk food marketer’s more sneaky goings on there they set sites up where kids can play games etc or have download able software which will have some sort of advertising in it, this in itself can create a viral effect of course the software will be free.

But hey that doesn’t matter they can easily re-coup there costs that piece of software could be on the desktops of 40 or 50 more children in minutes and don’t forget e-mail. It all adds up over time in fact there was a report saying not so long a ago that Internet advertising is having more spent on it than television in our country that is.

Schools have machines in full of junk food drinks how you can call these vending machines is beyond me may as well put on the front I dispense junk because that is there primary purpose.

What you need you need to do is catch this manipulation early if you can and educate your child that to them it’s a business and that is all it is you can’t control all that your child sees but at least make a effort other wise you may have a obese child in years to come.

A ex football player named Ian Wright in our country did a series on television called Ian Wrights unfit kids some of the things you saw where quite surprising one poor child was 50% body fat very over weight for his age unless something is done more children.

Will become obese later on in life because of the marketing they have been subjected to at such early ages, lets see if we can change that and why not start right now.

One last thing don’t stand there in full view of your on child eating a big mac or some other crappy food that only tells him to eat and your doing the marketing men a favour.

5 Reasons You Need to Eat Breakfast

  1. People who have breakfast in the morning, are generally more alert and able to concentrate and focus on tasks. So if you have an exam or test in the morning it’s always a good idea to have breakfast.
  2. It has been found in some studies that skipping breakfast might be a cause of obesity, if you eat a good breakfast. You far more likely to eat less food during the day, but also to add to this if you eat less food anyway your metabolism does slow down.
  3. If you eat a high fiber breakfast such as porridge (oatmeal) Weetabix,or muesli or any other high fiber breakfast not only. Will you prevent yourself from fatal diseases these types of breakfasts curb hunger also have a twofold effect.

Is Your Microwave Making You Fat ?

Is this one of those news stories that makes you think it’s the radiation that would do this ?. Well in this case it’s a no it isn’t it’s more of a case of what you put in it that matters, mind you everyone probably guessed that anyway. So what’s the deal here then well it’s down to some research that has done been done in the UK revolving around the causes of obesity.

Jane Wardle who is a professor has noted that obesity in this country shot up about the same time as the microwave oven boom around about 1984, around that time also more ready meals started appearing on our supermarket shelves, the facts speak for themselves about 1980 eight per cent of women were obese and six percent of men were. Now fast forward a lot of years to 20o4 and that figure jumps to twenty four percent for both men and women, that’s a huge increase.

The scientists say they blame foods high in calories and less physical exercise, they also say our previous generations had higher calorie intake than we do know but there jobs where more physically demanding and hence they stayed slimmer.

The study came about because it became of interest of when the obesity epidemic started tracing back and it seemed to begin in and around 1984 to 1987

Prof Wardle said

“So then we looked at what changes were going on in the food and activity world at that time and one of the striking changes was there were differences in the speed with which we could prepare a meal as a consequence of the introduction of microwaves.”

Also she noted that about this time food became cheaper and ready meals started to appear on our supermarket shelves.

It’s not to say that using a microwave is a bad thing but a lot of the food that you buy of the shelves can have a lot of fat and sugar in it, ready meals that is although as in everything there are also healthy alternatives thing is a lot of people don’t read the labels when buying these microwave meals there just so convient for busy people.
One of the scientists said supermarkets are to blame people use cars more now than ever before food is everywhere you go it’s cheaper, people exercise less now than they used to.

Another scientist comments where that obesity can be tracked after the war 1945to be exact, just before this time there was less food about and in fact people overall where healthier. When new technolgies started to arrive they took the place of doing hard work in both work and pleasure.

We as a nation now have never had so much food in our lives no shortage that’s for sure, I suppose in summing up it’s all a matter of choice really.

Lower Your Energy Density

If you may be struggling to lose weight and at times it can be frustrating when the scales don’t move then it might be worth looking at your energy density to see if you are eating enough water in your diet not drinking it but eating it. In simplistic terms eating more foods that contain water such as fruits and vegetables and low fat foods.

In a recent study which revolved around “energy density” which is based around calories per gram fat being 9 cal per gram and water having none, foods that contain a lot of water such as fruit and vegetables and soup are more calorie dense so you can eat more but without gaining weight.

Dr Barbara Rolls who commissioned the study said

“Increase the water content of foods you eat and decrease the fat content,” Roll said.

This lays the foundation for her diet which is called Volumetrics in this particular study people where studied for six months 658 participants where told to do the following one group had a single counselling session the remaining two had eighteen sessions in total the ones that had the counselling where to told to cut energy intake and exercise more, and on top of that do something called (DASH) which is short for
dietary approaches to stop hypertension.

Which focuses on the consumption of more fruit and vegetables and water based foods and low fat food options, what was found from the study was this all three groups lost weight no great surprise there you might say, but all three groups where then combined to see the differences between all three, those who reduced there energy reduction by the most lost more weight than the others five point nine kilograms (13 pounds) to be exact. Compare that with the ones who didn’t reduce there energy density who lost two point three kilograms (5 pounds).

Also eating this way you can eat more food without any worry of any added gain approx 300 grams more, I never used to bother eating soup at one time so glad I did now after readfing this brings it home more.

Does Inner Fat Mean Inner Danger

At one time of day we would say that inside every fat person there was a thin person waiting to get out, but is that necessarily the case now doctors have pioneered a scanning process, which may prove otherwise, it would seem that even though you are thin you could still have inner layers of hidden fat which could be quite dangerous.

Something called magnetic resonance imaging is used to scan your body, and what was found was in a group, of 10 people four of those people could be thin on the outside but fat on the inside, one of the heads of the study group says that this may cause either diabetes or heart related problems, really people need to focus on being healthy but not just thin also, you may tend to think you are healthy but if you have this inner fat, it may affect your health.

Even if you are slim you could have fat around your important organs such as your liver pancreas and heart, or around your muscles as well, when the team were using the MRI scanner they stumbled upon this by accident, they were doing research into Type II diabetes and oddly enough people who were thin also had the foundations for type 2 diabetes which is normally associated with obesity.

It’s even being said now that BMI can no longer be relied upon as a indicator of health, the reasons given for this are if your muscle mass is bigger than normal it will weigh more than fat so therefore your BMI will say you’re overweight even though you have very little fat mass.

When exercising this internal fat will burn off but, not if you just use diet alone
one of the participants in the study, who was scanned was very outwardly healthy but it was found that his internal body fat was quite high, he has a desk job and due to the demands of his job, wasn’t able to go to the gym.

So the moral of this story is even though you may have a thin outside body appearance you may still have problems later on in life.

Can Red Wine Help Prevent Obesity ?

Research done at the Harvard Medical School, in conjunction with the National Institute of ageing, have found that a substance contained within red wine called resveratrol, changes the negative effects of eating a diet high in calories.

This particular compound is found within grapes, what was found to be puzzling was that people in France can eat a high-fat diet, and still have less heart problems. The researchers gave mice more calories which came from fat 60 percent to be precise, as time went on due to their high fat diet they developed enlarged livers, plus diabetes as well. Another test group was observed to see what the effect would be when given the resveratrol instead, these mice were also fed a high-fat diet as were the others, it didn’t actually stop them from putting on weight, but it did stop their glucose and insulin levels getting high, and also their livers remained normal, also findings were the mice tended to live longer.

As with everything the scientists do say that it is early days as regards these findings but also went on to say that it is also a quite exciting finding nonetheless, people have been saying for a long time about the health benefits of wine, in moderation of course as is the case with everything.

Here is what the scientists say:

It’s a pretty exciting area, but these are early days,” said Dr. Ronald Kahn, president of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Information about resveratrol’s effects on human metabolism should be available a year or so, Dr. Kahn said, adding, ”Have another glass of pinot noir — that’s as far as I’d take it right now.
