Can Your Personality Affect Your Weight Loss?

3285225262_5fb7c46a92[1]Isn’t being optimistic one of the key factors when you’re trying to lose weight? After all things can start to come into play if you have a negative mindset at certain times.

If you’re feeling negative you may not want to do any exercise, or you may make the wrong food choices through emotional eating. So does your personality affect how successful you will be in losing weight? Let’s find out if that is the case.

Some research recently published in a publication called, Bio Psycho Social Medicine, says that certain psychological characteristics. May determine your weight loss, 101 participants were psychologically profiled in Japan.

They had counseling in the following areas, in both nutrition and exercise. This took place at the Kansai Medical University Hospital Obesity Clinic, the length of the research lasted six months. They completed psychological questionnaires both before and after the research had finished.

The questionnaire was designed to find out their personality types, those people that developed their self-awareness were far more likely to lose weight than those who didn’t.

Of the people who went through the particular programme, their optimism remained better and over all characteristics remained constant. Here is where it gets interesting though the people that went through the six-month process, and were optimistic to start with, were far less likely to lose weight compared to other people whom were not.

So these people obviously went in with a baseline personality and not too overly optimistic. So what does this actually prove them, in a nutshell it means if you are feeling a bit negative about what you’re doing, say with your diet and exercise.

Then some small behaviour modification will put you right, what the researchers said was the people that are like this care more about what is going off and their health. There is nothing wrong with being optimistic, what we can take away from this is, if you are feeling over optimistic at the start of what you are doing.

Then you may not necessarily go where you want to with your goals.

Here are some tips to keep you more focused long-term and stay optimistic. I think quotes are a great way to gain wisdom and you can almost apply them to anything you do within your life.

  • Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment, Buddha
  • What we think, we become, Buddha
  • When you’re first starting off either being on a diet or exercise programme, start off with a open mind just like the people in the research did, this is what being in the present moment is all about.
  • Don’t have to higher expectations it can take time to find the right foods, and combination of exercise which works best for you
  • Try meditating I can’t recommend this highly enough if you want to stay in the present moment and keep focused with what you’re doing, another benefit of it is it stops the internal dialogue in your mind from taking over your life
  • If you don’t succeed at first don’t give up keep trying we are all different as people somewhat lose weight quicker than others, and it does take time to your body to adjust to eating less food.

What Are The Top Ten Foods For Optimum Health?

fruit and vegetablesIt is probably fair to say that, there is no definitive list of what the top ten foods you should eat for optimum health, but here are some good pointers from various different sites.

As well as the ones I think should be in a top ten.

The Mayo Clinic in their top ten list, has the following foods they say the reason for them being there are the following reasons; they have lots of nutrition in, have an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

At number one they have almonds the reasons they give for eating them are they have lots of nutrition in them such as fibre, riboflavin, iron and calcium, they say that almonds have one of the highest levels of calcium in them as far as nuts are concerned, also they contain a good source of plant protein. If you are a vegetarian then you can get protein by eating these nuts.

Their second suggestion is apples myself would I give a thumbs up with this choice, the main reason being is apples contain something called pectin, which is a fibre that fills your stomach up, it expands so you tend to eat less.

If you eat one Apple with each meal that you have, so you eat three apples you will tend to eat less food throughout the day. Apples have a built in appetite suppressant. They also have blood glucose lowering properties, as well as preventing the build-up of cholesterol within your bloodstream.

At number three, they have blueberries this is fruit has been getting a lot of attention recently and being hailed as a super food. I never used to eat these but I have been recently making green smoothies with them or eating them raw, they taste delicious. Blueberries contain high levels of vitamin C and lots of fibre hence why they are so good for you.

The next on their list at number four is broccoli, this is quite a strange looking food it can look like a mini tree but don’t be put off by how it looks, broccoli is packed full of nutrition some of the health benefits listed are prevention of diabetes.

Preventing heart related problems, and the prevention of some cancers. When you boil broccoli or steam it, or have it with some other vegetables such as potatoes and meat, it does taste delicious.

Number five is red beans on the Mayo Clinics list and the health properties of red beans are, high in phosphorous, potassium, copper and thiamin. They are low in fat have good antioxidant properties, which help prevent heart disease and cancer.  They have good levels of fibre, protein, and magnesium. Red beans are a good all-rounder as far as nutrition and health is concerned.

Next up we have salmon, which is number six on their list, one of the reasons it is a good idea to eat, oily fish such as salmon, is because of the high amount of omega three fatty oils that they contain.

These particular types of fatty acids stop the build-up of cholesterol in your body, of the  LDL type, which is the one that you do not need. Salmon tends to be also high in protein, which is another plus factor.

Salmon can also help with lowering blood pressure, so if you suffer from it, it might be a good idea for you to incorporate more oily fish into your diet.

Next down the list is something that I have recently been incorporating into my diet, which is spinach this is number seven on their list, I don’t know if you can remember a cartoon called Popeye which was based around a sailor a villain and his wife.

But when Popeye used to get into scrapes, and needed some extra strength, he would eat spinach in order to accomplish what he needed to do. Here are the health benefits of spinach, which tends to be high in both vitamins A and C and contains folate as well.

It contains vitamin B6, which is a vitamin you may need if you are suffering from stress or depression. It has also immune system boosting properties, so if you are ill or your immune system needs a quick boost spinach would be ideal for yourself, it can also help with maintaining healthy hair and skin.

In at number eight sweet potatoes, these contain a high amount of beta-carotene; your body uses this to convert into vitamin A, that particular vitamin may help with slowing down the ageing process. Another particularly good benefit of sweet potatoes is they are, high in fibre compared to their counterpart the normal potato. They taste a lot better also.

As far as vitamins are concerned, they contain the following vitamins A, C and E, and minerals folate and potassium. Sweet potatoes undoubtedly are a good all rounder. If you have never tried them they are highly recommended, they taste delicious.

At number, nine they recommend vegetable juice, so clearly this is a case of buying some vegetable juice such as tomato juice or any other, which you prefer or making your own at home all you need to do is just by your own juicer.

If you go with tomato juice which is one of the things that they recommend, it’s health benefits are good it contains something called a lycopene this is a very powerful antioxidant and may prevent heart problems.

Finally, at number, ten on their list is wheat germ; wheat germ has many nutrients in it, which are thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, magnesium, iron, potassium, and zinc.

Wheat germ is a good all-rounder if you’re lacking in essential vitamins and minerals. This concludes the list from the Mayo Clinic.

The Daily Mail has their top 10 super foods, which are

Number one, Apples please sees the above information regarding apples

At number, two they have baked beans surprisingly enough even though these are quite a basic food, some people may sometimes under estimate them.

They have insoluble fibre in which is good for digestion also they contain a lot of protein and the tomato sauce, contains lypocene please see tomatoes for the benefits of lypocene.

Next, they have broccoli to read about broccoli please see the Mayo Clinics list

At number four they have, olive oil the reason for it being there is according to them is the large amount of mono saturated fat it contains. In addition, it has LDL cholesterol lowering properties, which is another good reason to use olive oil when you are cooking something; it has high levels of antioxidants.

Number five, they have listed wholegrain bread the reason being is this type of bread is known, as a low GI food which means that it breaks down slower giving a time delay affect as far as glucose is concerned.

It will keep your blood sugar more stable over a longer period so you will feel less hungry. More so than if, you ate conventional white bread. Wholegrain bread or wholemeal bread contains more fibre, which is another good reason to eat it; it will keep your bowel movements more regular.

Listed at number six, they have put Salmon please see above for health properties of salmon.

At number seven, they have conventional tea, which is something British people tend to drink a lot of , the reasons they give are it counts towards your fluid intake, and depending on what type of tea you drink various different brands have high levels of antioxidants which are good at cell protection. Green tea also has very high levels of antioxidants and is supposed to be able to help with weight loss.

At number, eight they have yoghurt and their reason for it being there are as follows. High levels of calcium, which is essential for, bone growth and healthy teeth, and it is ideal for people who have intolerance to the sugar in milk, which is lactose. Yoghurt is very beneficial for the health of your large intestine so if you have stomach upsets then this may be a good choice for you.

At number, nine they list bananas, among the health properties of bananas are potassium, which they are high in so if you have problems with high blood pressure they make an ideal choice, they also have good levels of vitamins B6 and are very high in antioxidants. People have this misconception about bananas thinking they are fattening this seems to be more of a myth. And finally at number ten they have listed Brazil nuts, the health properties of these, are they have high levels of selenium which may help fend off cancer, Alzheimer’s and depression.

Here is my own compilation list of the top ten health foods.

First on the top of my list would be sweet potatoes main reason being is they have so many benefits, as in essential vitamins and minerals contained within contained within them

Number two would be blueberries, please see the Mayo Clinics list for the health benefits of blueberries.

At number, three would be garlic even though many people may not like eating this, it is a very beneficial food; it has cholesterol-lowering properties, can help with lowering blood pressure, and may help with preventing blood clots from forming.

It is also very good for your liver one of the best ways to eat it is raw if you can stand it, on its own raw it can be very strong.

Number four would be dandelion tea this is also a very good antioxidant and is great for flushing your liver out, one of the things that people don’t particularly understand is if you have a sluggish liver, it can interfere with losing weight that is why it is important sometimes to eat certain foods which support it.

I would also put here peppermint tea and green tea both because of their high antioxidant properties.

Number five would be onions or spring onions, onions tend to be very good for cleaning out your system and probably something we don’t tend to eat enough of, in India some people were randomly checked whom didn’t eat onions they had higher cholesterol levels compared to those who didn’t eat onions.

They also tend to have anti-clotting agents similar to those in garlic. They may also help prevent cancer. In countries where people eat many onions, there incidences of stomach cancer tend to be a lot lesser.

Number six would be tomatoes please refer to the above references to tomatoes.

Number seven would be green and red bell peppers, mainly because of the following health benefits, they may help in preventing the following cancer’s, cervical cancer and prostrate cancer which is something that men tend to suffer from more than women do. They have high levels of beta-carotene in which can be essential for good health, and high levels of vitamin A and have immune system boosting properties.

Number eight would be avocados this is something else that a lot of people don’t pay attention to, there are so many foods that we don’t even know exist but pay little attention to. These have high levels of antioxidants, good fats, potassium, and essential vitamins.

Number nine strawberries, these are one of my favourite fruits when they are in season here, they are high in iron so if you are feeling a bit rundown or tired then strawberries may be able to help you, strawberries are very good for cleansing your whole system throughout.

And finally number ten beetroot, its health benefits are high levels of beta-carotene, folic acid and contains powerful ingredients for liver detoxification, so if you’re feeling a bit sluggish beetroot may be a good choice, it will also help with losing weight if that is what you’re trying to achieve.

Blogger Interview The Fit Shack with JoLynn Braley

images.websnapr.com

A bit of a change of direction for myself this week I’m going to start doing blogger interviews on a regular basis.

So here is the first in a series of interviews, and my very first guest is JoLynn Braley, so to start off I was like to say welcome to my blog JoLynn, and thanks for doing this interview with me so without further ado let’s get started.

Thanks for interviewing me today Mark, I’m happy to be a guest on Lose That Tyre!

Mark

How did you first become interested in blogging and can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog?

JoLynn

Well, here’s the simple stuff – my name is JoLynn Braley and you can find me blogging at The Fit Shack about weight loss, health, and fitness from a whole mind, body, spirit perspective. The bulk of what I write about is based on my own life experience with being overweight and addicted to refined sugar, however I also love to do research and have written several posts on topics that required a good deal of it.

I first became interested in blogging when I learned of it at the end of 2006. Even though I hadn’t heard of blogging until then, I had been active in a weight loss support forum since 2004 and blogging seemed like a natural extension of forum posting in my mind. While it’s not exactly the same, if I hadn’t been involved in that forum I don’t know if I would have started blogging.

Mark

Your blog revolves around mind body and spirit how does that fit in with your blog and the message that you want to give to other people?

JoLynn

That’s an excellent question and is based on what I’ve learned throughout my life, struggling with overeating and overweight. What I’ve learned is that there is no quick fix, that being overweight is a complex issue for many people, and that if prescribing a healthy diet and exercise plan to an overweight person were enough then no one would be overweight, would they?

I’ve learned through my experience that it takes a complete mind, body, spirit shift in order to embrace a healthy lifestyle – this shift is needed to not only lose weight, but to keep it off for life. For example, if you’re an emotional eater (using food for emotions), addicted to refined sugar and white flour (or other foods like unhealthy fats, excess salt, or even dairy), or think that you don’t deserve to be healthy and fit, then there are other changes that need to be made.

Sure, you need to change how you eat and exercise, but if you don’t change how you think and feel about yourself and food then you very likely won’t maintain your loss for life.

Mark

I see you have an interest in the law of attraction would you say this has helped your blog go in the direction you want it to and that it helped you in your life as well?

JoLynn

I have several teachers that I gravitate towards who teach the law of attraction and how your thoughts create your reality, Abraham-Hicks and Louise L. Hay being two of them. I am still learning every day about the law of attraction and I do feel that it has definitely played a positive role in growing my blog.

Mark

Was it your own weight issues that make you want to start a blog about weight loss or was it something you was just interested in anyway?

JoLynn

I started blogging about this topic because I have personal experience with it. I wouldn’t have seen myself blogging over the long run about a topic that I wasn’t truly interested in, and I also wanted to spread the word on just how unhealthy processed food filled with refined sugar is for the human race.

Mark

What would you say the most rewarding thing is about being a blogger?

JoLynn

It’s most rewarding when I receive feedback that I’ve helped one of my readers, either through a comment, a blog post, or an email response I’ve given them after they have contacted me. If I didn’t receive any feedback from my readers and know that I was making a positive impact I think it would be difficult for me to continue putting time and effort into the posts that I write since my goal is to provide value for my readers.

Mark

Would you say that blogging has helped you grow as a person and make you more accountable for things in your life such as keeping your weight on track?

JoLynn

Yes, blogging has definitely helped me grow as a person. It has helped me grow in the areas of time management, communication, personal growth, self-improvement, customer service, diplomacy, conviction, persistence, consistency, just to name a few – and these don’t necessarily have anything at all to do with my personal weight loss and fitness goals!

Yes, blogging in itself is an experience in personal growth, however it also helps me stay accountable for my personal health and fitness goals.

I’ve even started Twittering about my fitness progress for an added measure of accountability, as well as to help motivate and inspire others to get moving with their own fitness goals.

Mark

Where do you see your blog going in the near future as to how it is now do you have any exciting new developments for the near future?

JoLynn

I have several ideas that I have not gone live with yet on my blog so at this time they are surprises for the future – good question though! :)

Where I see it going in general is that it continues to grow in readership and exposure to more and more people who are interested in not only losing weight, but in living their life to their fullest potential. After all, if you don’t have your health, then what do you have?

Top 10 Weight Loss Myths Debunked

mythsThere are always rumours that fly around a bit like old wives tales that never seem to go away these are commonly known as myths or urban myths.

If I slash my calories will I lose weight quicker ?

I’m afraid it doesn’t quite work like that, a lot of people try this when first trying to lose weight, this is one of the worst possible things that you could possibly do.

When you’re trying to lose weight you need to burn fat if you start to slash your calories dramatically your body will go into starvation mode.

When this happens it holds on to fat in order to use it as fuel later on if needed. When you are eating reasonable amounts of food, then your body knows that there is no crisis so that it won’t hold on to it’s fat stores. This might work for a short term solution but not for long term weight loss.

If I exercise until I am physically exhausted will I lose weight more effectively ?

In order for your exercise programme to be effective, it is far better to do a warm up and go through your exercise routine until you start to become hot and your heart rate goes into the fat burning zone. If you start exercising until you’re exhausted each time, all this will do is cause muscle fatigue and nothing else, the actual thing that you are trying to achieve is gradually warming your body up this is how fat is burned within your body.

And will bee far more effective in the long run because you will build muscle which is active tissue and burns fat even while you rest.

If I buy slimming products will this be an effective route to my weight loss plan ?

I wrote a post about a week ago about this very subject and really the best thing to do with this type of myth is do some research, and find out whether their claims do actually work.

It’s very easy to be sold on testimonials and other recommendations from doctors whom will recommend products.

Really in my humble opinion I would say steer clear of anything that says it will help you to lose weight unless it has been actually proven in trials and tests.

It’s very easy to buy these type of products and have the placebo effect coming into action, because you are taking something you naturally assume that it is working.

And don’t ask me why but one particular thing comes to mind as regards this is, bit of a quick digression from what, I’m talking about but it’s all relevant.

I can remember once watching a episode of Judge Judy, and a woman was trying to sue somebody, whom she bought some breast enlargement pills off and her argument was they didn’t back up their claims and work.

But then Judge Judy turned round and said “how can you be so dumb you think that if these pills worked lots of women would be walking around looking like Dolly Parton”. You get the point.

What if I buy low-fat foods

This is something else that needs to be approached with caution reason being as fat doesn’t necessarily, make you fatter eating more calories than you need is what makes you fatter, eating fatty foods doesn’t help but it all depends on the type of fat some fats are better than others.

Monusaturated fats are healthy than saturated fats another problem with this is how do you classify what is low-fat, even a product having 5 g of fat per 100g is still a lot of fat, plus a lot of these so called low-fat meals can tend to have lots of sugar in.

To compensate for the lack of fat which is not very good either because this eventually will turn into fat, sugar enables the fat storage hormone within your body.

So it’s probably best to avoid these at all costs stick to fresh food at least you know what you’re getting.

I have a slow metabolism

Another good one which becomes a good excuse for most people the thing about this is almost everybody has the same metabolism it isn’t necessarily a genetic thing. Or people say that some people have fast metabolisms and other people have slow metabolisms, in the real world though all you need to do is eat regular meals, aim for six small meals a day.

And build your muscle definition up and really that is all you need to do in order to speed your metabolism up. In a nutshell you will only have a slow metabolism if you believe in yourself.

If I eat late at night will I gain weight

It doesn’t matter what time of day you eat food this won’t necessarily cause you to gain weight, one other important thing to remember here is don’t skip breakfast, if you do this you are far more likely to eat more food during the day rather than if you didn’t eat breakfast.

If your metabolism is kept going and you concentrate on building muscle tone then you will continue to burn fat even while you are resting.

I’m not allowed to eat certain foods any more

There is nothing wrong with having some foods that you enjoy, but you just need to make sure you do it in moderation we all need treats as small rewards, otherwise we are denying ourselves some pleasure in life, so eating a bit of a something you enjoy won’t hurt just as long as you’re sensible with it.

You tend to eat more food when you’re hungry

This will not make you eat more food, you tend to eat more food when you’re feeling emotionally stressed, because of the calming effect of food when you’re feeling stressed you’re far more likely to reach for fatty foods, so recognize when you are feeling emotional and do something else this will train your brain to stop reaching for food when you’re feeling emotional.

Starchy foods can tend to make you fat

Depending what kind of carbohydrates you eat a general rule of thumb is to avoid things like, refined carbohydrates which tend to be in things like cakes and other high sugar products.

Starchy foods are a great thing to eat as far as weight loss is concerned, sweet potatoes are a great example of this as they contain lots of fibre as well.

I shouldn’t eat dairy products because they are unhealthy

It all depends on the particular product if you drink semi-skimmed milk, and low-fat cheese and make sure it is low-fat cheese, there is nothing wrong with eating dairy products especially yoghurt as it has been known to help eliminate fat from the body.

Also cheese is a very good source of protein if you don’t want to give up eating it.

Are the Benefits of Drinking Water Overated ?

benefits of drining water, drinking water, drink waterDo we really need to drink eight glasses of water a day ? This is something that has been around for quite a long time now, and being as there are quite a few splits between people, as to whether or not you need to drink lots of water a day.

I myself have seen various claims about drinking water in regard to weight loss whether they hold any substance is another matter, all the ones I’ve come across are the following.

  • Drink water before a meal this is supposed to fill your stomach with water so you eat less
  • Drink ice cold water this is supposed to speed your metabolism up because your body has to warm the water up.
  • And just drinking water itself is supposed to help you lose weight.

But that’s not the main reason for writing this post is it’s more a case of what health benefits are there to drinking water all round. No doubt those people who spend a lot of money on bottled water, which is which incidentally is very big business these days are probably going to be quite disappointed by what they may read here.

The Facts

Some scientists have been digging around to see if this theory does in fact hold any water sorry about the pun. For all the people connected with the eight glasses of water theory it has now been proven, that there is no great benefit to drinking the suggested amount of water a day.

Stanley Goldfarb who conducted the research said “there is no benefit from drinking increased amounts of water” who is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania he goes on to say “that there is no solid scientific evidence to prove the theory of drinking lots of water ”

Stanley Goldfarb wanted to get to the bottom of where the eight glasses came from he “says that it is a necessary think there is a problem with drinking the water”, but that you might not need to do it. Looking back through medical archives there didn’t seem to be any evidence and/or studies to back up the claim.

So it seems that this was something that was started and took on a life of its own a bit like an old wives tale you might say, the researchers then went on to to look at some of the myths that are associated with water.

Which are as follows.

  • Helps to flush out toxins
within the body the only thing they found with this claim was that it could dilute toxinsbut not
necessarily flush them out of your body.
  • Water helps your organs function better
This claim found came up with nothing as well
  • Drinking water before a meal or water as a whole makes you feel full
They say that in studies for some people this worked and some it did not but Goldberg says this area could do with more studies and research.
  • Helps to make your skin look better One study showed that this there may actually be more blood flow to your skin as a result of drinking water but other than that nothing else conclusive was found.
  • Prevents headaches There was only one study that was found with any real relevance to this the people that drank more water reported having less headaches but the statistics didn’t hold much reverence whatsoever.

Conclusion

So it would seem that that the people that do support drinking lots of water maybe just have an overall placebo effect, this doesn’t mean to say that you shouldn’t drink lots of water far from it but you probably don’t need to specifically drink eight glasses of water a day as you probably think that you may need to it is merely more of a personal preference than anything.

I myself used to drink lots of water each day thinking somehow that I was gaining lots of benefit from it but now I am wondering if that is the case.

What are your thoughts on this particular subject matter ? any feedback or comments would be quite interesting to read based upon your own personal experiences of drinking water.
